In Possible-全國空間設計科系聯展( Department of Space design, Associated Exhibition)

This weekend, I went to see the "Department of Space design, Associated Exhibition". Be honest, I was disappointed in most works of this exhibition. Some projects were not even finished, and the renderings looked terrible. However, there still were some nice designs.

In my opinion, Dayeh University's works were the best in this exhibition. The topic of their individual exhibition is "the struggle between light and landscape"-sounds a little weird, right?

Unlike the other schools' students who could choose different design issues with their own wills, the Dayeh University's students all had a same issue which was given by their chair professor. In the last year of their university life, they have to design a tomb as their thesis works. And all of them must use the same rendering skills for their works-traditional hand drawing, such as water color, pencil or marker.

This strategy has its own pro and con. The advantages are that it makes their works looked very fancy and clean-all works are organized in the same rendering style. However, this strategy also reduces the variety of their works, even limited the creativity of their designs.

We could see this problem in the rendering skills which they used. Most of the students chose to use the water color and pencil as the main material, because these are the simple ones to apply. It is hard to see other kind of rendering styles in this exhibition- collage, pen or even pastel, those which you could see very often in the works of Archigram, Bartlett and AA schools are all disappeared.

Even the work itself became very banal-no new planning, new program and new forms. They all look like Tadao Ando's works but without Ando's spirit.

By the way, the narrator (one of their students) told me that their tutors asked them to find a field without development as their building sites. I think that request is a little tricky- if you choose a vacant site in the suburbs, you don't have to deal the problem of urban context and lots of law restrictions. In the same time, no restrictions, no creations.

(BTW 02: This is a plan, not a section.)

Anyway, although I have pointed out several disadvantages of their works, I still thought they are the best in this associated exhibition. Rather than the other schools, there are more details in their plans and sections, and their models are much fancy than the others' works. In conclusion, this is a good exhibition with high completeness.

These are the works of KunShan University. Actually, I think their works are lack of intention. Most of their works are lack of theory to support. They are just nice-looking models.

Take this one for example. Although this skyscraper looks pretty cool, the design group has never mentioned why they make the building looking like this in their presentation, and the function of those cubes inside were still unknown. I think that they only manipulated the form without any reasons, and it is a serious problem in architecture design.

I guess this is the work of ShuTe University. There are occasionally some good works with interesting forms in this exhibition, but most of them are lack of logic and theory to support their innovative forms.

Don't you think it looks really like the early works of Emergent Architect?
