Just for Practice - How to grow as a graphic designer(Note)

Chuang, Che-Kuang

I used to hate those inspirational books such like “From A to A+: The Secret of Apple” or “The Secret skills of Samusung Employee”. Although I don’t doubt what these books said, but I do think all these skills in books are not as amazing as they described, and most of them are almost similar without slight difference. Maybe Apple and Samsung have cooperated and trained their employees secretly for many years or maybe these books are just copied, pasted and changed titles by the same editors.

In my opinion, I think most tips from these inspirational books are banal and boring, but I do read some useful tips in the book” How to grow as a graphic designer”. This book was written for young students and young designer, teaching them how to manage their own design studio and to communicate with their clients. It collected many senior graphic designers’ working and practical experiences, such as Matthew Carlson, Laura Zeck and Glenn Mitsui, etc. I am especially impressed by the experience shared by independent designer Matthew Carlson. He sorted out his years-working experience and made some brief and useful rules as a tutorial to give the young people some life directions.
Although I am not a graphic designer, I think this rules are also helpful for young architects, even industrial designers. The following are the contents which I generalized from Mr. Carlson’s writing:

1.    No matter what your jobs is, do not forget to pick up your pen and draw something - the author means that whether your position is a supervisor or an assistant who has to do many chores in the design company, you should spend more time in creating if you choose designer as a lifetime career.

2.    Be skilled in some specific techniques- something like web design, poster design or techniques like 3d modeling or 3d rendering. It may make you different.

3.    Remember to renew your portfolio regularly when you have some new works- then you have nothing to worry when you have to hunt jobs. It is also a good way to see if you have any progress in your professional skills.

4.    Create your own portfolio web- it is a way to demonstrate your abilities and a good way to make people know you. The most important thing is that it could bring you some potential clients form internet.

5.    Try to work for different companies, including small ones and large ones- It gives you opportunities to participate in big projects when you work for a large company; and it forces you to learn more skills and do something different when you work for a small company.

6.    Don’t be afraid to be an independent designer- it is very important to know how to find your own customers and to finish a design work by yourself. Experiences such like scheduling working scripts and managing the costs of projects are priceless.

7.    If you are an employee, don’t forget to pay attention to the development of your company- lots of designers are too focus on their design works and forget to see the entire development of their company.

NOTE01:這次的練習因南下故晚了兩天才寫。
 NOTE02: 因為實在想不到要想啥,所以將之前針對"How to grow as a graphic designer"一書所寫的心得整理翻譯了一下。等於是英-中-英的翻譯,肯定跟原意差很遠的......
