Just
imagine there was an astronaut in an exhibition hall which was no gravity, and
he was trying to find the right aspect to see the painting on the wall. He has
tried every different direction to see this painting- standing straightly or
upside down, but no matter how hard he tried he still couldn’t find what right
direction to see this painting. In the same time the creator of this painting
was hiding in the corner and watching the astronaut’s interesting behaviors.
That gave him an inspiration- Maybe I can make a work which could be seen in
every aspect!!
The previous story shows the main idea of “all-aspects”.
We have always lived in an environment under earth gravity, and that causes all
of the artificial works, including architectures, paintings, industrial products
are all restricted by gravity. In the other words, there is a “right direction”
for all these works. However, earth gravity only existed in planets, and most
space of universe is agravic. If there is an artist who is born in a space
station and has never lived on a planet, what kind of works will he create? Maybe the work
which could be seen in every aspect! No matter what aspect you use to see this
work (maybe a sculpture or painting or something else), it still can show its
beauty. Even more, every different aspect has its own beauty, even upside down.
In order to complete this idea, I applied it into my digital sculpture series as one important concept. The works in this series are all created in 3d modeling software (Autodesk Maya), therefore they would not be limited by physical environment and I could make any forms I imagined. Although every different sculpture has its own subject, there is one common point in all of them- you can see it through the aspect you like. There is no “main perspective view” in these works, you can stand aside the sculpture and see it through an ordinary peoples’ viewpoint, or become a giant and hold this tiny toy in hand, see it in any direction you like (Well, of course it is possible. After all these works were created in 3d software and you can do anything want). Most importantly, No matter what directions you use, this sculpture could still stay in beauty and show no disadvantage to you.
Maybe
some people will ask that: Well, according to your definition, are those
geometry forms the exactly things which completely conform the rules of “all-aspects”?
Of course not!! In my opinion, a great sculpture should show different beauties
in different aspects. Just like Michelangelo’s David, you can see different
beauties of human body through different directions of the statue (but you
still can’t see it through an upside-down aspect, therefore “David” still doesn’t
conform the rule of “all-aspect”). Although a geometry form (for example, like
a ball) could show same shape in every direction, but it also means that it
could one beauty even through different directions (a ball is simply a ball no
matter how you see it). Therefore geometry forms don’t fit the rule of “all-aspects”,
not even matches the standard of a good sculpture.
In conclusion, “all-aspects” is still not a
complete theory, but I will gradually finish it and applied it into my
following digital sculpture projects. Hope the studying in University of
applied Arts Vienna will help me to finish that!!
