Just for practice - Jorge Mario Bergoglio, A Pope of People

Chuang, Che-Kuang

A puff of white smoke rises up from a chimney on the roof of Sistine Chapel, and that is the signal that the faithful have been waiting for-it means that the conclave is over. Then it is time to reveal that who will become the next pope, take the throne of St. Peter. The 76-year-old Argentine cardinal, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, is the final winner of this election.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio has taken the name of St. Francis, the man who was the patron of Italy and who tried to help all kinds of people. Jorge Mario Bergoglio not only inherits St. Francis of Assisi’s name, but also inherits his will and great love. He has put a lot of efforts in caring AIDS patients and people who suffered for serious diseases. The most famous incident of Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio is his concern with single mother and their babies who were refused to be baptized by priests in his diocese. He seriously scolded these priests last year.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born in December 17th, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His parents were Italian immigrant, and his father was a railway worker. He had four brothers and sisters, and before he received the call from God, he majored in Chemical and wanted to become a chemist. He became a Jesuit in 1969, and has served in Buenos as an archbishop. He was the second place in the election of 2005 conclave when he was 68-year-old. In 2013, he was the oldest candidate; almost no one thought he would become the final winner.

He is the first pope from southern America and the first non-European pope since the eighth century. Lot of Argentines expect him to make good changes and open a new chapter for Christian. However, even though now Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the highest leader of Christian world, he doesn’t change his style -being close to civilian and always caring the poor, patients and vulnerable groups. To many people, He is simply Father Jorge, a kindly elder.
